Christmas Ornaments on Tuesday Craft

Updated: Feb 14, 2021

Hello! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!! My tree is already set to start adding the ornaments. I had another craft scheduled for today, again with fabric, but I found a few small wood pieces that were waiting for me for a few years. I really don't remember why I bought them but I think it had to do with my collage art. The wood pieces are 4.5 inches x 3.25 inches and I thought they were a good size for the new ornaments I wanted to add to my tree this year and Voila! I love the way they look on the tree.

This is what I did to make the ornament:

  1. Resize one of my nativity designs in collage painting and added the text (all in PhotoShop). The size of the image is 3.2 inches x 4.4 inches, a bit smaller than the wood size.

  2. Print the image ( I printed a few in one 8.5x11 canvas paper from Red River)

3. Let the printed images dry for 24 hours.

4. Apply two coats of Satin Varnish ( I used Liquitex)

5. Let it dry.... preferably 24 hours

6. Cut the images.

7. Prepare the wood painting the back, sides and front edges.

I used gold for the first one but then I liked more the Christmas green.

8. When the paint is dry apply a thin coat of All Purpose Glue to the front

9. Use a credit card or a similar tool to distribute the glue evenly.

10. Place the image on the wood and use a roller (Brayer) to make sure it is glued to the wood surface.

11. Use a piece of parchment paper (or any other similar paper) to protect the image and using a spatula apply pressure from the bottom to the top trying to get the excess of glue from the image and the wood. Repeat this a few times until there is no glue coming out.

12. If necessary, apply another coat of satin varnish to the image.

13. If you want it to be an ornament, add a string to the top back of the wood. I used rick rack (painted with acrylic in gold) and glue.
